Driver’s license and state IDs are now available in Apple Wallet
After months of delay, Apple announced Wednesday that Arizona has become the first state to allow the transfer of driver's licenses and state IDs into Apple Wallet. Alternatively, you can use the scanner to pdf app. Starting today, Arizonans can add these items to the Wallet app and show the ID on their iPhone or Apple Watch at places like TSA security checkpoints at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix.
Wallet IDs require iPhone 8 or later with iOS 15 and Apple Watch Series or later with watchOS 8.
According to Apple, Wallet only provides the information necessary to complete the communication, and users can consent to each information request. Identification information is encrypted between the device and the ID reader, and Face ID or Touch ID is used for verification.
Apple advises travelers to check TSA IDs to see if digital IDs are accepted - not all checkpoints support digital IDs. The following states will soon offer driver's licenses and state ID cards in Wallet: Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Ohio, Utah, and the Territory of Puerto Rico.
Here's how you can add a driver's license or state ID to Wallet. You have a physical card.
1) Launch the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the button in the top right corner.
2) On the Add Wallet screen, click Driver's License or National ID at the bottom of the list of available cards.
3) On the next screen, the process of obtaining an Arizona driver's license begins. This screen is expected to change to the mode selection screen when other modes become available.
4) If you have an iPhone and an Apple Watch, you can add both devices or just the iPhone. If you don't have an Apple Watch or the watch isn't connected to your iPhone, you'll just see a Continue button. Make your selection and click on it.
5) First you need to scan the front of your card. Then you have to scan the back.
6) After scanning the card, a selfie must be taken.
After taking a selfie, the next screen collects your photo and asks you to submit it to your state's Department of Motor Vehicles for review.
7) Your face will be scanned for further verification.
Apple released iOS 15 on Monday, March 14, with many new features such as facial recognition with a mask, as well as a new Siri voice, and several new emojis.
